PracticeLesson 7 of 8 · 20 min · mostly doing
The short version

Photographers who miss fewer moments know their controls by feel. This drill builds that in fifteen minutes.

Sit somewhere comfortable with the camera in your hands, strap around your neck or wrist.

  1. With eyes open, touch each of these five controls in turn: shutter button, main dial, mode dial, playback, ±. Say each name out loud.
  2. Close your eyes. Touch them again in the same order.
  3. Open your eyes and check you were right. Repeat until you get all five, twice in a row.
  4. Now change the order. Have someone call them out, or shuffle five slips of paper.
  5. Finally, eyes closed: switch on, turn the mode dial to P, press ± and add one step brighter, then half-press the shutter.

Level 2: with the camera at your eye

Once level 1 is easy, do the same thing with the camera held up to your eye, or at arm's length if you shoot with the screen. This is how you'll really use it.

  1. Camera to your eye, looking at something across the room.
  2. Without lowering it, turn the main dial and watch a number change on the screen or in the viewfinder.
  3. Press ± and turn the dial. Watch the marker move on the exposure scale (Lesson 2's screen diagram, item 4).
  4. Press playback, look at the photo, and press the shutter halfway to jump straight back to shooting. Most cameras do this.

Level 3: against the clock

Set a timer for 60 seconds. In that time, switch on, set the mode dial to P, take a photo, view it, add one step of brightness, take it again, and switch off. Repeat until you can do it in under 40 seconds with a minute to spare.

Where people get stuck

  • The main dial does nothing. In Auto, many cameras lock most settings. Turn the mode dial to P.
  • ± seems to do nothing. In M mode, ± only works if Auto ISO is on. In P, A or S it always works. Some cameras need you to hold ± while turning the dial.
  • Two dials, unsure which. Try both and watch the screen. Write which dial does what on the Field Card.
  • Phone users. Do the same drill with your camera app: find the shutter, the lens buttons, tap-to-focus and the brightness slider (tap the screen, then drag the sun icon), all without looking at your hand.

Self-check

  • I can find all five controls without looking.
  • I can switch on and set P mode in under 10 seconds.
  • I know where the menu, playback and lens release are.

Try it now

Do the drill once today and once tomorrow. The second time is when it sticks.
